Registration Levels
UKCHIP aims to meet the needs of Health Informatics professionals at different stages in their careers and across a range of specialties. To do so, we offer registration at several different levels.
1. Student & Affiliate Registration
Student and Affiliate registration is suitable for those who are just commencing a career in Health Informatics. You may be a student, a trainee or just moving into Health Informatics and have not yet gained the requisite experience for full registration (see below). You should either be working in or aspiring to work in Health Informatics or studying a relevant qualification.
Student and Affiliate registrants demonstrate their commitment to professionalism in Health Informatics by signing up to the UKCHIP Code of Conduct and agreeing to abide by the rules of the Council. Your summary details will be published on either the Student or Affiliate Public Register on the UKCHIP website.
Once you have been accepted onto the scheme, you can remain on it for up to four years, without having to make a renewal application. At any time, when you meet the criteria, students and affiliates can apply for full registration. Ways of working towards registration could include working in health informatics, training and experience at work, full time study, short training courses, attendance at conferences and meetings, personal study and research.

- Registration costs a one-off fee of £20 for up to four years on either the Student or Affiliate registers
2. Full Registration
Eligibility for full registration is based on an assessment of the applicant's qualifications, experience and employment profile. It also takes account of the outcome of your self assessment against the UKCHIP competency standards for registration.
Level 1 Registration is intended for those who are either relatively new to the profession, or whose work does not require a particularly high level of Health Informatics knowledge or experience. Eligibility is based on a combination of qualifications (which do not need to be specific to Health Informatics) and experience of working in Health Informatics. At least one year's experience in Health Informatics is the minimum requirement for Level 1 registration. There are two main options:
- one year of Health Informatics experience and a National Qualification at level 3 (A-levels, GNVQ Advanced, ONC, BTEC National etc) or higher or
- two years of Health Informatics experience and a National Qualification at level 2 (GCSEs, GNVQ Intermediate, BTEC 1st Diploma etc).
Level 2 Registration is intended for those who have begun to develop a career in Health Informatics. Applicants will typically have higher levels of responsibility, qualification and experience than Level 1 registrants. A typical registrant will have 2 or 3 years Health Informatics experience, a qualification at NQ level 3 or 4 (e.g. A-levels or 1st degree), and a significant degree of autonomy in their job. Two year's experience in Health Informatics is the minimum for registration at Level 2. Assessment of your application provides considerable flexibility to trade off between qualifications, experience and employment profile.
Level 3 Registration is intended for those whose careers in Health Informatics have reached a stage where they have the knowledge and experience to provide professional leadership. A typical registrant will have more than 5 years experience in health informatics, a qualification at NQ level 4 or 5 (e.g. 1st degree or higher degree) and operate at a strategic level in their job. Three year's experience in Health Informatics is the minimum requirement for Level 3 registration. Again, the assessment of your application provides flexibility to trade off between qualifications, experience and employment profile.
