Biography: Ian joined the NHS as an analytical chemist in 1976, and was fortunate to have worked in clinical laboratory computing during its formative years when there was ample opportunity for innovation and research. The laboratory information system he developed at Guildford during the 1990s was among the first in Europe to demonstrate some of the leading concepts of the time.
In 1997 he moved to the Medical Physics Department at the Royal Surrey County Hospital to build up a scientific computing team and undertake specialised clinical computing projects. He spends one day a week in the Department of Computing at the University of Surrey lecturing to MSc students, and was appointed a Visiting Professor in 2005.
His research interests include artificial intelligence, representing knowledge in databases, the cognitive and patient safety aspects of the clinician-computer interface, high performance computing and active RFID technology.
