The Institute of Health Records and Information Management (IHRIM) was established in 1948, primarily as an educational body. Its objectives, then as now, are to provide qualifications at different levels as well as career and professional assistance for members. IHRIM members are now working in the fields of health records, information management, clinical coding and information governance, all of which are constituent parts of the Health Informatics profession.

The Institute encourages professionalism and a structured examination system exists for those who wish to obtain a professional qualification. Qualified members of the Institute have an advantage when seeking employment in their chosen fields. IHRIM provides the routes to qualification at a number of levels by way of examinations at Foundation, Intermediate Certificate and Diploma levels and the National Clinical Coding Qualification (UK). IHRIM also offers work-place assessed qualifications through the Certificates of Technical Competence in Health Records Practice at Basic and Advanced levels.

UKCHIP works closely with IHRIM, which is represented at all our Council meetings.  IHRIM qualifications are recognised as a valuable asset when applying for registration and we strongly encourage IHRIM members to register with UKCHIP as part of the wider Health Informatics profession.
