Applying to join the UKCHIP Register

You can download a guide to the application process here or see an outline below.

Before you can apply to join the UKCHIP register you be asked to create a user account and provide some basic information:

  • Your name
  • Your email address
  • A password

This information is used to identify you when you return to complete a competency assessment, and if you choose, continue to full registration.

You are also asked to provide details of any relevant qualifications you have achieved and a summary of your time spent working in health and in informatics. This information is used to indicate a level at which you might register with UKCHIP.

Competency Assessment

After Sign Up, you are able to take a self assessment questionnaire to determine your core competency in health informatics. The individual assessment questions are related directly to UKCHIP’s registration standards and the outcome of the assessment will suggest the most appropriate level you should register with UKCHIP.  A downloadable assessment report can also be used to help determine your plans for continuing professional development.

The competency assessment tool is free to use as a standalone activity that does not require you to register with UKCHIP.   However if you do wish to register, the outcome of the assessment will be included in your application as part of the UKCHIP registration process.

You may complete the assessment in stages if you wish; your input will be saved when you log out.

Registration

To apply for registration you need to complete the on-line application where you will be asked to provide:

  • Personal contact details
  • Current and previous employment details
  • Details of any other professional memberships
  • The names and contact details for a sponsor and a referee
  • A statement supporting the level of registration for which you are applying
  • A declaration of your commitment to the UKCHIP professional Code of Conduct

You will also need to provide a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) plan for the next twelve months and pay the registration fee before your application can be accepted.

There are a number of reasons why we ask you to provide this information:

  • There is no single route into the profession of Health Informatics so your application is based on your own competence assessment, qualifications and career experience, together with your plans for maintaining and developing your competence.
  • Information needs to be of sufficient detail or the value of registration is diminished
  • The process has been designed to allow applicants from different backgrounds the opportunity to demonstrate how they meet the registration requirements
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a requirement for registration with any profession.

Before you start the registration process it will be useful to have a recent CV to hand; you will find you need dates and details of your qualifications and previous employment. We do not require a large amount of information, e.g. the responsibilities of your current post should be summed up in just a few sentences - you do not have to enter your full job description.  You may complete your application in stages if necessary; your input will be saved when you log out.

You are not competing with others, as in a job application. You are providing sufficient information for our assessors to determine whether you meet the criteria for the registration level you have applied for. If the assessor needs more information, we will ask you for it before they make a decision.

If you have any questions about completing the application, please contact the Administrator by email: admin@ukchip.net or telephone 0844 870 7902.

Processing your application

When you have completed all parts of your online application you will be taken to the secure payment site where you will be able to pay your registration fee online by credit / debit card.

If your organisation is willing to pay the registration fee on your behalf, we will require a purchase order number and our invoice will need to be paid before your application can be processed. You can then use the purchase order number to register.

A group of staff can be included on a purchase order and a discount is available for registration of more than ten staff.

Once the registration fee has been received your sponsor will receive an email requesting confirmation of the details of your application.  Please ensure your sponsor is aware they will be contacted and available to respond to this request before you submit your application.

When your sponsor has approved your details, your application will be allocated to one of the UKCHIP assessors to determine whether you meet the criteria of the registration level you have applied for.  If the assessor declines your application or feels uncertain about the decision, it will be referred to a second assessor.   We may also contact your referee or give you the opportunity to provide more information.

We normally aim to process applications within 28 days, as long as your registration fee is paid and your sponsor has confirmed your application.
